Update on Case Study April 11, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — claudiasaavedra @ 6:01 pm

So far my case study has been going well. I have collected a lot of information on my student Michael. He is now being referred to SST so hopefully next year he will be receiving extra support in the classroom.

Things have been going great with his tutor, which is one of my best friends. She informs me that he works well with her one-on-one. Sometimes he can by hyper but we discussed the possibility of having her work with him outside while they do some kind of movement like shooting hoops. He needs some type of activity that will release all his excess energy so his mind can concentrate.

He went on a trip to Washington D.C. with his group Boys in Action. Upon returning from the overnight field trip the teacher who went with him informed us how he was concerned for Michael safety.  His hyperactivity has reached a peak and I hope to refocus him again and lead him down the path we were going down earlier.

We have tried contacting his mom multiple times and have not been successful. I believe she is very hesitant because in previous years she has been bombarded by negative comments on his son’s behavior by teachers. Our team in the past has done  a wonderful job not highlighting the negative. Instead, we try to find commonalities from home and school in order to see how we can work together. Our school social worker has taken the next step to post a note on her door that we would like to meet with her.

I look forward to seeing how he progresses within my last few weeks of student teaching. Hope everyone has a wonderful last 2 and a half weeks!

    Claudia,
I am glad that you have found a way for Michael to be successful. Working one-on-one is a great strategy and allowing him to do physical activity while he is working will allow him to release energy but it will probably make it more exciting for him and make it not seem like extra work.
It seems that you have made a lot of progress with him which is excellent and I am sure it will carry on even after we are done student teaching. Hopefully he will have more differentiation provided for him after SST assesses him.

Well I just think Rhonda would fall out on the floor for you yielding to Gardener’s multiple intelligences! And It must be nice that you can get that constant feedback from your friend because you see her often. have you seen much academic growth with Michael? or is it more behavioral? I’m just wondering because I have seen much behavioral growth in my student, but the academic growth is following s-l-o-w-l-y. I fell unprepared to send her to second grade. Nice job with your progress though! you are great for children.

Claudia- I think it is awesome that you have been so dedicated to your case study student. You seem to have made a lot of improvements and it is wonderful that next year he will hopefully be receiving extra support so that he can succeed. It is also wonderful that you went out of your way to find him a tutor that is one of your friends so that you can constantly be updated on what is happening outside of the classroom. Often times a teacher will set up a tutor for a student and I find there is not much collaboration between the teacher and the tutor, but you are working with his tutor to help him succeed even more. Great work!
